District Governor John Mitchell Visits the Club
One of the duties of the District Governor is to visit every Club at least once during their term. With over 50 Clubs in our District, that takes real dedication. Governor John visited the Wyckoff-Midland Park Club this past Thursday. He provided an overview of the health of the District and laid out some broad objectives for the year.
His talk included the challenges of Membership (if the District drops below 1,150, we will be merged into another District!). Hence growing membership is a major goal for all the Clubs this year. As part of the initiative we will be reaching out to the Korean Community especially in Palisades Park to develop members and clubs.
Other key goals include having all Rotarians attend the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI), having all Rotarians donate at least $100/year to the Rotary Foundation, and continuing to raise funds and awareness to eliminate polio.
Finally he encouraged all the Club Members to get involved at the District level, and plan to attend the District Picnic (September 15), the District Holiday Party, and the District Conference, which this year will be held in Lake George from May 14 to May 17.
Gift of Life Update
Our Gift of Life Child, Hans, had his surgery this past Monday. It was successful!
After some normal post-operative challenges, Hans was released from the hospital on Friday. He and his mother stayed with Rotarian Jennifer Padolina on Friday and Saturday.
Paul and Carmen plan to take them back to their house on Sunday. Paul hopes to bring Hans to a meeting in a couple of weeks.
Operation Backpack
Star of Hope Ministries in Paterson held their annual “Operation Backpack” this month, and once again member of the Club volunteered to assemble the backpacks.
Last year Star of Hope was able to assemble 1,500 backpacks, and this year’s goal is over 1,700! The Ministry acquires the school materials, volunteers take 2 hour shifts to put them together, and the Ministry delivers the packed packs to local churches and charities for them to distribute to disadvantaged children throughout the area. Assembling the packs is great fun and a very worthwhile project. Many in the Club look forward to it every year.
The District Governor Role
The Rotary district governor performs a very significant function in the world of Rotary He or she is the single officer of Rotary International in the geographic area called a Rotary district, which usually includes about 45 Rotary clubs. The district governors, who have been extensively trained at the worldwide International Assembly, provide the "quality control" for the 27,000 Rotary clubs of the world. They are responsible for maintaining high performance within the clubs of their district.
The district governor, who must make an official visit to each club in the district, is never regarded as an "inspector general." Rather, he or she visits as a helpful and friendly adviser to the club officers, as a useful counselor to further the Object of Rotary among the clubs of the district, and as a catalyst to help strengthen the programs of Rotary.
The district governor is a very experienced Rotarian who generously devotes a year to the volunteer task of leadership. The governor has a wealth of knowledge about current Rotary programs, purposes, policies and goals and is a person of recognized high standing in his or her profession, community and Rotary club. The governor must supervise the organization of new clubs and strengthen existing ones. He or she performs a host of specific duties to assure that the quality of Rotary does not falter in the district, and is responsible to promote and implement all programs and activities of the Rotary International president and the RI Board of Directors. The governor plans and directs a district conference and other special events.
